Hey Power Japan readers,
It’s been a few months since I posted anything here. There’ve been many changes in my life that have kept me away from Power Japan, and one of those changes is the reason why I’ve made the decision to pause Power Japan until further notice.
That change is my new position as Japan Energy Finance Specialist for the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) at the beginning of this month.
If you’re not well-versed in the world of energy think tanks, here are three words I would use to characterize IEEFA: principled, authoritative, and impactful.
My intension here isn’t to promote IEEFA so I’ll keep this brief. The organization’s mission is to accelerate the transition to a diverse, sustainable and profitable energy economy. Its team spans Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific, and South Asia, its analysis is consistently grounded in economic and financial data, and its clear-eyed recommendations nudge policymakers and business leaders toward more ambitious decarbonization strategies.
IEEFA’s work over the last few years has rippled through the energy discourse surrounding Japan. Its landmark March 2024 report established that Japan’s 10 biggest LNG buyers are now turning to resell their surplus volumes to South and Southeast Asian countries. Its March 2025 analysis challenged METI’s conception that Japan’s fossil fuel “self-development ratio” strengthens energy security. That’s just two out of many examples I could cite.
In taking up a position with IEEFA, I want to focus all of my energy toward amplifying its voice and impact As Arnold Schwarzenegger says in his memoir Be Useful, “no complaining about a situation unless you’re prepared to do something to make it better.”
This is my version of “doing something” to push Japan toward becoming a leader in clean energy and decarbonization.
To this end, I’ve paused all paid subscriptions. If you were a paid subscriber (thank you!) you will not be charged any more. All of my past posts will still be available.
I will still be active on LinkedIn, where I will post my work through IEEFA and engage with content I think are noteworthy. Feel free to connect with me there.
Thank you so much for reading.
